Hawaii: December 1973

When I first started traveling from New York to Australia in 1972, it was a 24-hour marathon journey: the first stop was Los Angeles, then Hawaii, then Fiji, and finally Sydney. Today, it's more convenient to take the 14-hour non-stop flight from LAX to Sydney; but in those days, it made sense to stop over in Honolulu for a day or two to begin the process of acclimating oneself to the staggering change in time-zones. In any case, it provided an excuse for several great mini-vacations in Hawaii throughout the early and mid-70s; alas, my trips to Hawaii have been much more infrequent since the non-stop flights were initiated in the early 90s.

The photos are fairly simple and self-explanatory; I didn't feel it would add much to write detailed notes about the surfers (taken on the north shore of Oahu) or the sunset scenes (taken from Waikiki Beach) ...
