Hawaii: December 1973
When I first started traveling from New York
to Australia in 1972, it was a 24-hour marathon
journey: the first stop was Los Angeles, then Hawaii,
then Fiji, and finally Sydney. Today, it's more
convenient to take the 14-hour non-stop flight
from LAX to Sydney; but in those days, it made
sense to stop over in Honolulu for a day or two
to begin the process of acclimating oneself to
the staggering change in time-zones. In any case,
it provided an excuse for several great mini-vacations
in Hawaii throughout the early and mid-70s; alas,
my trips to Hawaii have been much more infrequent
since the non-stop flights were initiated in the
early 90s.
The photos are fairly simple and self-explanatory;
I didn't feel it would add much to write detailed
notes about the surfers (taken on the north shore
of Oahu) or the sunset scenes (taken from Waikiki
Beach) ...
