Just Enough Structured Analysis

Welcome to the Just Enough Structured Analysis project.  This is an update, condensation, and pragmatic revision of my 1989 tome, Modern Structured Analysis, which is still employed by malicious professors to torture innocent students in universities around the world.  You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to appreciate that a lot has changed since the late 1980s — e.g., client-server technology, the Internet/Web, wireless computing, the rise and fall of the dot-coms, the growing popularity of object-oriented and component-based technologies, etc.  Hence the decision to update the material, and to rewrite what was probably far too ponderous a tome (672 pages) even in the days when people actually had enough time to read books printed on dead trees, and then a calm period to contemplate the metaphysical essence of the book. Today, we’re too busy to spend much time thinking about anything, and we’re also far too busy to read more than a couple hundred pages of the bare essentials on any topic. What we want is “just enough ... ” — enough to give us the basic idea, enough to get us started, enough to give us a grounding in the fundamentals. That’s the motivation for Just Enough Structured Analysis.

As with the last several books I’ve written, this one will be posted on the Web site on a chapter-by-chapter basis.  I’m interested in getting feedback, both positive and negative; comments, suggestions, criticisms, and anecdotes will be more than welcome.  If you send me any material that looks so interesting that I want to excerpt it, quote it, or incorporate it verbatim into the manuscript, I’ll ask your permission first; and if you provide any useful references, concepts, or ideas, I’ll be happy to provide attribution so that everyone knows you’re the source.

If you think I’m missing any topics, or if you think any of the chapters are no longer relevant in today’s brave new world where we’re all living in Internet time, let me know — otherwise, feel free to plunge into the first chapter.

Happy reading!
